USB Wireless adapter corrupts windows during power failure

I have a Linksys wireless adapter (USB). If it is up and running and there is a power failure it corrupts Windows in such a way that I cannot see any USB adapter until I reinstall Windows. I am using XP professional and it did the same thing on two different computers with the same operating system.
