I ahve tried to use a DB 9 to USB cable and connect it to a FastRad but could not get it to work. It looks like my windows XP needs a driver. has anyone been able to get one these of these to work?

The reason I want to use one is because the newer PCs and Laptops no longer has DB9 ports on the back of the cabinets.

I wouldn't know how to get you the driver, but the USB to DB9 adapter that I have was plug and play. It was on my XP laptop but our company bought us new Win 7 machines and it loaded up just fine with it as well. Just wanted to let you now it will or should work. I use it with an external modem for remote access and direct access as well.

Thanks, do you know the name of the maker of that cable?

P.S. is it NULL or NON-NULL?

It would be straight through (Non-Null).

See if this universal driver helps you.

Been 14 years since I installed mine which came with a CD w/driver at that time, these days I don't see them coming with any for some reason.
Mine was a shorty going USB to 9 pin which you used your old 9pin cable along with it.
I believe it installed a couple phantom modem port/com....make sure to make/change the com # to 4 or 5 if can.

find out the manufacture is prolific. However I have been unable to find the correct driver their website is very confusing and I cannot seem to get what I thought was the driver to open in Windows XP.

Just got online, mine is the same manufacture as what you have, bought it in '09 but I don't remember a CD with it, windows found the driver and installed on its own. I like it when it "just works".

The USB/Serial dongle I have came with a CD-ROM with drivers. Wasn't plug and play. Hate those things... but good luck finding a new laptop with a modem and serial port these days. You may be able to get a port replicator for your laptop (HP and Dell makes them for their laptops) that usually have serial and parallel ports on them.

I can get DELL LATITUDE D600 on eBay for a song some as low as 10.00. I have two of them that I use for remote access, temporary installations, etc.. They work great and are in great condition. They have the older 9 pin ports on the back, wireless, USB, etc.. If they fail they are just a throw away.

Also - newer laptops (Vista, Win 7, Win 8) may have issues running older Nortel software you need for these older systems. Case in point - BCM's running 3.7 or earlier. The Backup/Restore Utility won't run on Vista/7/8 - need XP, 2000, etc... to do that (I can do it in a Virtual Windows XP session on my Vista laptop).
