Ok so before I formatted the system it was working fine. Now that I've reinstalled windows I'm having an issue. Where when I start up Hyperterminal. I get the normal first box about naming the connection. After that It asks me for "host address", "Port Number", and "Connect using". I can't get it to ask me for my information that I want in. I looked at modems under start > control panel. It shows a Location , but I can't delete it. What gives? I never entered in a location, I'm wondering if this is the issue?. I've never came across something like this before.

Just to clarify, you are attempting to use the USB/Serial converter correct? If so, you need to reinstall the drivers for the device, XP does not have them by default.

Get rid of hyperterm and and download Tera Term , much easier to use than hyperterm .

oh i agree... i prefer SecureCRT or PuTTY myself though

Best would be to get rid of your laptop and get one with a Serial port.

Serial-USB converters are a pain in the arse. They are unreliable and finicky and the inside contacts on the USB plug quickly wear out and it stops working so you have to keep buying new ones.
A classic example of an advance in technology that creates problems and reduces reliability.

Never had an issue with mine... And laptops are getting to the point where you can not find them on there anymore, even the business series.

But then again, as everything in technology... it all depends on the user and that users experience in what opinion you end up with.

I agree that less and less laptops have a Serial port anymore, but if you work in Comms it's well worth making the effort to get hold of one.
I can't believe you say you never have problems with USB-Serial!!!!
On many networks I work on, I have to use a supplied laptop (which basically never have Serial ports) which means I have to faff around installing drivers (which means I have to faff around with local IT support for permissions) and then when the dumb thing locks up and fails to recognise the virtual Serial port I have to reboot the silly thing which, being a Windows laptop takes forever, and then I find the USB contacts on my adapter have worn out and I have to go out and buy a new one......aaaarrrgghhhhhhh

wow lol... I do what ever I can to NOT use a companies laptop unless they are my employeer for that very reason... If there is a restriction on the network that requires me to do so, I use it for network access and then use mine for any networking work due to the fact I already have all my tools installed.

have 2 of em, one I carry with me all the time and I keep at the house to work with my lab equipment... both work great, whats bad is that I picked it up at Fry's lol... considering I think its a golden rule that if you buy it from Fry's it is suppose to magically break!?

I don't have many issues with USB to serial adaptors. I use one from tripplite . Once in awhile it will change the com port and you just have to figure out which com port it is using , almost always something in the com1 - 4 area .

wow ok, yea forgot about installing the USB drivers. It was 3am when I was trying to work on it. Need alittle slack, and it being USB it wasn't my first instinct to install drivers.

But I'm 90% sure that is infact the issue.

Ty!
o and finding a laptop with serial port is horriable, I really want a mini. Good luck getting that with a serial =P
