Hi there,

Can anyone tell me what the speed of USB 2.0 is? Also the speed of just plain ol USB?

...and just so you're also aware, 480 megabits per second is 60MB/s (for 1.1 it's 1.5 MB/s).

These are maximum speeds: very few USB2 devices run at that speed. There are in fact three standard speeds for USB2 devices: the manufacturers are usually shy telling you which their device supports. In fact, the standard itself is written to confuse us as it calls devices Low speed, Full Speed and High Speed.

Low speed USB2 = 1.5Mbps
Full Speed USB2 = 12Mbps
High Speed USB2 = up to 480Mbps

To make matters worse, if you use a USB2 hub, everything connected to the hub will run at the speed of the SLOWEST device connected. So as keyboards and mice run at 1.5Mbps, the chances are the benefits of USB2 will be lost to the user!

tf1 has a good point. Here's more information I came across:

If you look closely at one of the sections, they incorrectly reversed the rated speeds for USB 2.0 and Firewire. But other than that typo, there's some good info in there.
