USB Soundcard install issues

Hi,

I have just bought a Philips PSC805 USB Soundcard and tried to install it on my Clevo D47EV laptop. No matter what I do I still get the dreaded yellow question mark in the device manager. It lists this component as a "PSC805", so XP knows what it's dealing with.

When I plug it in I get the "new hardware wizard" that asks for the driver CD. This product comes with software, but uses the default XP USB audio driver. After the search finishes I get the usual "cannot install hardware" message.

I have tried to install the card on a desktop machine and it goes in with no problems. Truly plug and play.

The only software difference between the two machines is that one is XP Home and the Laptop is XP Pro.

I have checked the BIOS on the Laptop and everything looks in order. I have also tried disabling the onboard soundcard and removing it's software. Still no luck :(

I have been to the sis website to check for USB drivers, but they are not listed as the OS should take care of that.

Any Ideas?

Regards,

Rob

Never tried one of these cards. Have you enabled Legacy USB support in the BIOS? I don't know if this will help. Also check that there are no resource conflicts on the device.

Hi,

Yes, Legacy USB support is enabled in the BIOS. There are also no conflicts.

I did wonder if it could be a USB power issue, so I disabled the built in USB wireless adapter and other built in components using the USB bus. This had no effect either.

I have also deleted the registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB and rebooted just to be sure.

I might try it with a PCMCIA USB card and see if that works.

Thanks,

Rob.

Have you tried more than just the one USB port. It may work in another port. I have had this with some systems, that a device will work in one port but not another. Just a thought.

Hi,

Yes, I've tried that as well.

It's very strange as the soundcard installs three different components into the device manager. One component is a Human Interface Device, another I can't recall, and the third is a Composite device. It is only this component that fails to install.

Have you tried installing everything, but this one device. Then visiting Windows update to see if that brings up a driver for the composite device?
