USB Scanner timeout

We have a lowend scanner, a DocuMate 252 (xerox) running on a Windows XP machine. I'm getting complaints from the higher ups that the machine seems to disconnect when idle for a period of time. It takes a few minutes for them to be able to hit the SCAN button in our software before the "Can not connect to Twain Device" error stops popping up. This just seems like something that is going to happen, but they won't accept that. Anyone have any suggestions?

Only thing i can think of would be to look in the properties section and see if there is a setting you can change?
And check dev mgr, make sure there are no marks on it there.
