USB - PS2 or Serial

I have an application we are writing that needs to scan bar codes. From everything I have read the USB and PS2 scanners sound like they work like a keyboard. so bascially anytime someone scans the output will popup in the what ever application is being run on the computer.... like if I was in notepad then it would pop up there. is this correct? or do the USB scanners act like a serial COM1 or COM2 or whatever and I would see the data only when I ask for it?

so in other words do the USB version need a driver and then act like a COM port?

USB scanners act like a Keyboard type /PS2 USB is plug and play so you can remove it or add it anytime. PS/2 requires going to the back of the PC and turning off the computer.
The nice thing about a USB scanner is it can easily be moved from one PC to another. The first time you plug it in a Windows 2000 or Windows XP box it loads the drivers from the scanner automatically then can be plugged in or removed at anytime. '98 and 'Me' boxes need a CD-rom, Windows NT does not support a USB port at all. Most computers have USB in the front for easy access. USB also work with laptops better as well. The PS/2 on a laptop has to be programmed since the other side of the PS/2 adapter is hanging loose not connected to a keyboard.
The HHP IT3800 is the one I recommend it uses very little power and works great with laptops and PC.
