i've having problems with my USB ports. it seems it's not working or even recognized in my SYSTEMS PROPERTIES. i'm running on win98SE, athlon 1.2 and asusA7 board. there are two usb ports and another 2 for extra. the other two are attached to the PCI slot. i just bought a new kodak digicam and installed the software and drivers already, followed all it's instructions and plugged in the camera but it's not seen or recognized by my PC. need help with this. thanks in advance!

Are the USB ports enabled or disabled in the BIOS? Windows can't 'see' them if they are disabled.

hello:
restart your computer, press DEL to get in to bios, look for any USB related parameters,ENABLE all of them.restart,I am not sure but you may be asked to insert windows CD.connect your camera according to user manual instructions and there you go,the camera is detected by the windows.
If it did not help, let me know.
When every thing else fails, read the instruction manual!

I have an ASUS P5A mb and I had the same problem. I downloaded the WINDOWS USB fix thing and then realized the USB was not enabled in the BIOS settings. I enabled it there and my computer would not start again. If you have downloaded this patch, and then figured out that the bios had the USB disabled, You may get a frozen startup!

Just warning you incase this happens.

PS: I had to completely format... my hard drive to get the USB to work - hope you don't get that deep into crap!

I have not looked up that board, so I have a question. You said that you have the on-board and then two "attached to the PCI slot". The ones on the PCI slot--are they actually a PCI card, or are they connected to the motherboard via a cable and are held in place OVER a PCI slot?

If it is actually a PCI card, you might want to remove it and try again. Make sure that your on-board USB works and then work on getting the extra card working correctly. On occasion, I have seen trouble with the add in cards like you are describing. Mudskipper
