Running WinXP Pro on an Intel D845GBV MB and 1.8G P4 CPU. Use a Brothers laserjet and HP inkjet printers.
Since first using this computer, printer response has been unsatisfactory. After several minutes of nonuse, the printer(s) will often? not respond to a print job. The Win XP Printers and Faxes window shows the printer is ready and the print job is recognized but the printer won't respond; appears to be in hibernation. When push the button on the printer to wake it up the lights flash but it doesn't print. Have to 1) turn the printer off/on and/or 2)unplug and replug the USB cable and/or 3)cancel the print job and start over to get the printer to work.
MS Knowledge base gave a tip on this and recommended installing SP1 and an update. Also saw a Knowledge Base article advising to go into Device Manager and clear the USB Power Management check box that “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. This made matters worse as it didn't solve the hibernation problem but caused the computer to reboot if I turned on the printer after the computer.
I have since rechecked the “Allow the comuter to turn …….” And still have to restart the printer if it sets idle too long. Very annoying.
Any suggestions?
