Is there any way to install my usb printer without the printer being physically connected? [Win XP]
HP says it is impossible - but they don't know everything!
(printer is HP model DJ3420)

Howdy:
You can install the drivers for the printer and the utility program if it has one, but the actual install won't complete UNTIL the printer is connected for the first time.

Hi SESaskDFC & Murray
Using the disk only takes the installation so far before demanding the printer to be connected and will abort if printer is not present. The drivers will not load.
The printer in question is in another country and I have to prepare the laptop so that it is ready for imediate use when it is sent back to join the printer. It is too complicated to expect the operator, my 81 year old mother, to have to install it herself and there is no one else to help.

my software has an option to continue without connecting the printer are sure yours doesnt. it still will not complete until you connect the printer.

Can you find the same printer somewhere here and connect it once just to finish the install?
Take the laptop to a store and tell the guy you want to test drive it.

Thanks all for your various suggestions.
My software doe not seem to have the option of continuing without the printer being connected. I had asked the store if I could use one of their printers to complete the installation and they agreed but found that they did not have the power supplies for those printers on display and were not willing to open a new boxed up printer to get at the psu (quite rightly).
I shall go on looking at other stores though. This particular psu has an unusual 3 pin connector so it has to be the one designed for this particular printer.
