hey all - we are having problems with new USB ports. P233 running Win98 - had two new USB ports installed and are trying to install a Lexmark printer and a Olympus Digital camera - both are plug and play devices and have disks. When they are loaded they are showing up as Unknown devices, is there some settings somewhere we are not aware of to change?? Bios is enabled for plug and play - thanks

First of all you should have USB support in your Windows 98. That is, when you right-click on an My Computer icon and select Properties if USB ports are marked with yellow question sign it means that for you USB support in the system is not installed.
But even at presence of USB support installed two troubles are possible. First, for installation of USB-devices it is necessary to use the drivers applied to devices. Second, new devices badly concern to old implementations USB on old motherboards.
So, despite of plug-n-play, it can be demanded manually to specify appropriate drivers.

thanks for your response - hmm looks like it is definately a conflict with the older mother board as well. Still looking into it to see if there is anything we can do other than buy a new machine lol

Are the two new usb ports install via a usb card or are the cabled to the motherboard? Also are these just the two or are they an additional two added to existing ones?

hi Maingeek

I will check about how they are installed - but the USB ports are two new ones - it didn't have any before. cheers

If the new USB ports are installed correctly and are showing with no problems then.............

you must install the software (TWAIN) drivers Before you connect your printer and scanner. You may have already done this but I thought it was worth mentioning

thank you all for answering. Apparently it was a new two port USB that seemed to conflict with the motherboard. It was replaced with a 4port USB and away it went. No real reasons why it didnt like it. But anyway thanks heaps

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with a new pci usb card (2ports).
I'm going to try a 4 port card now, but what I want to know
is: Do I have to switch on "onboard usb" in the bios or
does it have to be switched off?
Thanks!

USB version 2.0 requires Win98SE or later for support.

I use win98se on a p2 366mhz computer. I need usb version 1.1 to work for my digital camera.

marky, you should have no problem. If you have onboard USB ports they will be 1.1. If you are using them, the BIOS has to have USB enabled. If not using them, disable in the BIOS or Windows will try to use them first.

Even if the ports are 2.0, they will work with 1.1 devices.

I bought a (trust)5 port usb card today and my troubles seem to be gone.
My printer works fine with it and hopefully my camera will do to. I don't know why it works but it does so I'm a happy man right now.I switched the onboard usb off because I'm using the pci usb card. Thank you Berton, for your advice.
Greetings,

Mark
