I have a computer (IBM ThinkCentre S50), and am having a problem with the USB ports on the front of the machine. The user is trying to plug a flash drive into the USB port but it completely locks up the computer as soon as it is inserted. Only way to fix is to reboot. Wierd thing is, if we put the flash drive in to the USB port, then start the computer, it works normally. Unless we unplug and try to plug back in. We tried it on the back ports, and they work normally. I'm thinking the USB ports aren't connectd properly, but then it shouldn't work correctly ever, right?

You could be right about how the front ports are connected - obvious thing to do is experiment (I recently built machine where I'd inadvertently reversed the connections - mobo manual and case connectors didn't have a common language! When I plugged USB device in, it appeared in the tray - but then nothing happened - except USB device - memory stick - got hot. Reversed connectors - all ok).

Could there be a setting in the bios for the usb in the front? I dont think so as how would it differentiate between usb being in the front or back. Sometimes its a jumper setting. Would you have the manual for the mobo? Would there be a jumper setting to enable front usb? I had one like that a while back, jumper setting to enable front usb.

lockend,
I would suspect the front usb connector is on backwards also.

I put a front usb connector on wrong once on an Abit VT6X4, a P3 mobo, and burnt out the usb on it.
I dont know if that still happens, hope not.

I only killed the usb, lucky me, got to keep the ABIT board. But this Abit board is the one that i lost to a power problem and when i started using UPS's that i rant about. So that mobo got nailed twice, lol. Its on the wall of reverence at my place, along with a few other items.
