I hope I am posting in the right area.

I am running Windows 98 SE.

I have just installed the software for my Canon Digital Camera (Power Shot A70) and when trying to download the pictures, my computer cannot find the camera. I have rebooted with the cable in the USB port hoping that my computer would find it.

Is there a way for me to test to see if my USB port is functioning? I have never used the port before so I don't know if it has ever worked. I don't have any peripherals that use USB.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Dave.

Have a look at Device Manager. At the bottom of the list you should have Universal Serial Bus Controlers. Make sure that you don't have any orange or red marks next to the controlers. If you can't see the usb controler you need to install a driver that should be available from your motherboard manufacturers website.
Is the appropriate driver installed for your camera.
With USB you don't need to switch off the computer to insert the cable. If you plug the USB cable in when your computer is running it should detect a new device.
Make sure that the camera is set so that it can send information over the USB cable.
Some camera's have a Connect switch & some you need to check the menu's for a USB connection option.

Thank you kestrel1 for your reply.

Since I was not sure how to find the Device Manager, I am not that computer saavy, I went looking in the Control Panel and found a Scanner and Camera button and open it which allowed me to add a new device. This detected my new camera and seems to have fixed my problem.

Just for your info there are two ways to find the device manager.
1) right click on 'My Computer', select properties & then the Device Manager tab.
2) Go to start, settings, control panel & open the system panel. Then you can hit the device manager tab.
Anyway, I am glad that you have managed to sort your problem out.
