USB network cable

Hi,
I'm looking for ways to connect my laptop and desktop. From laplink's web site, they imply that only a usb-usb cable and their software is neccessary. I already have a copy of laplink and pc anywhere, but is it worth me paying (50 dollars) for this cable?
Does anyone know how it works after you have connected the two computers.
