USB Mouse Freezing Intermittently

Hi all,

I have an odd, intermittent problem with my (wired) USB mouse (optical) and I'm hoping somebody can help.

Occasionally (perhaps once every few hours, sometimes less frequently) the mouse pointer will freeze, and when I look at the LED on the bottom of the mouse it is flashing on and off (rhythmically, each flash lasting about a quarter of a second). A couple of seconds later it stops and the mouse continues oeprating correctly. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this: the problem occurs when I am playing a game or just surfing the Internet. All other USB devices continue to operate as normal even when the problem is occuring. I've tried the mouse in various USB sockets with the same results, and also in a powered USB hub. When the problem occurs and the mouse is plugged into the USB hub the other devices connected to the hub still work.

If anyone could suggest a solution I'd be very grateful. It's no more than a minor annoyance most of the time (except when I'm in the middle of a game, and then it can be an extreme annoyance!).

Many thanks,

Ed Metcalfe

Hi Ed,

Sometimes it's best, especially with low-cost input devices, to just replace a buggy component. It sounds like a simple hardware malfunction. We're so used to things just working that when something doesn't, it's unusual...but it does happen. Unless it's an expensive gaming or special app mouse, I'd just recommend replacement. If it is, I would <shudder> call the manufacturer for support.

Two things...

first, I have to agree with wahnula...

second, this is not a HARD DRIVE issue and it should have been posted in the correct section... forum602

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

Apologies for the use of the wrong forum - I must have selected the wrong one from the list by mistake.

Ed, it was just a general pointer, I reread the what I wrote, and it came over a bit too harsh, which was not meant...

I too have an USB optical mouse that behaved just like that... turned out that the cable had a break in it, I replaced it and had no problem so far...
