Hello,

I have been directed here by another user. Basically, the problem is I have an USB-connected optical mouse with 5 buttons (a Trust MI-2500X) and I can't get the 2 programmable buttons to work. If it helps, I can switch it to PS/2. driverguide.com (suggested by another tek-tips user) yielded no results. Any chance I could find any?

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean you "can't get the 2 programmable buttons to work?" What do you want them to do? I'm not familiar with that brand of mouse, but if you're talking about one with those "internet buttons" and you want it to work like it does in Windows, then you might try out this link. I don't know how well it will work, though, as I haven't tried it.

On the other hand, if you want to get those buttons to, e.g. emulate scroll wheels or other mouse buttons, that's just a matter of tweaking your mouse configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You may just need to change the protocol (Explorer/PS2 seems to work well for many-buttoned mice) and number of buttons. I recently set up the extra buttons on my trackball, so I'll just point you to my blog posts about it as a starting point.

They are Internet buttons (suggested funtionality is Back and Forward, but the mouse came with a Windows program which allows me to change that). The device already has a scroll wheel which works fine. I will try the link above. Hopefully I have the skills to configure the mouse for myself. Thanks for your knowledgeable advice. Cheers!

/etc/X11/xorg.conf has the mouse options, as AdaHacker said.

Here's my mouse

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

man xorg.conf will tell you everything you need to know.
