In the 'safely remove hardware' it shows the hard drive but did not register the drive on 'my computer'. Anyone have any ideas?

Has the drive been formated? Check for the drive in disk management.

As sleepsalot says, check the drive is in disk management, which can be found in Administative tools-Computer Management.
If it is not formatted you can do this from the Disk Management console.

Drive have been formated with windows XP Pro SP 1 and I checked disk management. It didn't register over there either. Is there any kind of utilities to read the data?

Thanks.

SP1 had issues with drives over 137Gb ... how big is yours?

Upgrade to SP2, the problems with drive size have been sorted.
You may find that the drive will be recognised.

Is this a flash drive? Does it work in other systems?

Just for the record, the 48 bit LBA size related issues only limited the 'available' drive size; it did not make the drive invisible to disk management.

Correct, smah, totally irrelevant to the reported problem, but I was trying to correct misconceptions regarding XP SP1 for any casual readers.

Thanks for all your replies, appreciate it. The drive is 200 GB. It was working a few weeks ago until I imported outlook message rules and then it stopped working. It might be the registry so I tried to slave it, but the BIOS did not even recognize it anymore. So I attached it as external drive using USB connection, the 'safely remove hardware' window sees it as Maxtor drive but 'my computer' cannot register it as a drive. Ran Maxtor utilities but to no avail. Do you all think my drive is fried?

Assuming this is an IDE drive, is it set as Master? Some enclosure require that setting.

Yes, tried both, set to master and slave. Still cannot register the drive on 'my computer'.
