I am looking at using those USB kits to convert internal Travan 10/20 and/or 20/40 IDE drives to external. I tried this once with a ADS TECH USB 2.0 Kit. Needless to say, it didn't work well. I was able to get Win 2000 Pro (and XP) to see the drive but it looks like the backup software kept timing out in communication with the drive. It would say that the tape was write protected when trying a restore (shouldn't matter) and exit the restore job, THEN the tape would start spinning (joy...). Similar issues for retention and backup jobs. I believe that it may have to do with the flash chip on the kit. I HOPE this is a manufacturer issue and not a global issue.
So, what I am asking is if anyone has tried this and what was your success rate (if any). What type of USB kit did you use? I kinda used this scenario as a cost savings project for our data mining operation (keep from needing a dozen PC's or so...).
Any help will be grateful.
