I plugged in my USB Flash memory drive into my PC this morning and I find that all of my files are gone! About 180 Meg out of my 256 meg is missing. What could have happened? Everything was fine last night but gone this morning.

Flash devices has a finite number of r/w cycles. Also, flash devices are sensitive to static discharges, so store it with care!

I was told that I must always tell Windows to eject the USB then pull the flash drive out. And by not doing this is how I lost 180 Meg of data.

It depends on the properties set for the USB drive .
Under drive-hardware-policies-..
Two choices
1) optimize for quick removal ( hot plug/unplugging)
2) optimize for performance ( stop device in systray before removal)
