Have an AKASA AK-EN-02BK external 3.5" IDE enclosure which claims to work with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports. Works fine with USB 1.1 ports but I cannot get it to "ackle" with any USB 2.0 ports. Have tried 4 different machines running either W2K or XP (both SP1 and SP2).

Any clues? Akasa's site doesn't offer any tech help.

I should have added that Windows reports "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it." This happens on all USB ports front or back. Other USB devices, flash drive, camera, etc., all work fine when plugged into the same ports...

Roger - shot in the dark - open the box and ensure that the board is isolated correctly and also earthed where it should be earthed.

Thanks Satrow. Well I can't see any wiring etc., wrongly connected or adrift inside the USB enclosure - there's very little in it to be honest... I have also tried different hard drives in this enclosure, but it still won't play ball with USB 2.0 ports.

In that case, I'd suggest that the board is outside spec - output is ok for USB1.1 but falls outside the USB2.0 - RMA it?

Does Google come up with anything based on the chipset of the enclosure?

Have to check, but I think it's over 12 months old, so probably not returnable.

Everything I have looked at so far re the chipset (GL811E) indicates it's fully compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0.

Will contact the U.K. agents for Akasa on Monday and see what they have to say...

Some interesting stuff there Satrow, thanks very much... I have already measured the voltage being supplied under load on both rails, and it looks ok - about 5% overvoltage which is neither here nor there. However, It's worth bunging on known good 5v and 12v rails from another PSU just to confirm it. Haven't got one that'll plug in directly, but no problem to knock up appropriate connectors on the bench...

1. A known good PSU makes no difference.

2. Connecting this USB enclosure to my laptop (USB 2.0) via a USB hub gives occasional connection, but not consistent. Doesn't work at all with minitowers with USB 2.0.

3. Despite the usually required Master configuration for the HDD, I've tried Slave and Cable Select jumpering without success.

I guess it's down to a faulty USB enclosure interface or partially damaged GL811E I.C....

The only other hints I can find relate to Via and nForce2 motherboard chipsets - unlikely across all the PC's you've tried.

i have a usb enclosure, can't remember the brand, but it comes with a Y-cable. one connector will work on some computers and the other side works with other computers.
