I have a Sony DRX-510UL (usb connection) DVD-RW drive that is no longer recognized by my computer. It spins up ok, but the USB connection thing does not see it. When I unplug it, WinXP does make that little "ding!" noise, so presumely it does see something. I have a USB keyboard that works ok. Under the System_DeviceManager, it sees a USB Mass Storage Device, but with error code 10 (device cannot start).

I've seen similar problems on a message board (and I've tried the Upper/Lower regedit deletion. The drive is still not recognized. Other forums ( point to a visual basic script ( but I've also got a nil result from that. My registry did not even contain the cdr4 and cdral mentioned there to begin with.

Could this be a result of installing the SBC Yahoo DSL software? How can I fix it? I've uninstalled everything associated with SBC that I could.

Help! Thanks...

If the KB works in the same USB port that the drive uses, then see if the drive works on another system.
If not, then try a different USB cord.
If no luck, then the drive may be toast.

If the KB does not work in the drive's USB port, and the drive works on another system, then the port may be bad.
If another port is not available, then install a PCI USB controller card.
