I'm running Linux version 2.4.21-27.ELsmp (bhcompile@bugs.build.redhat.com) (gcc version 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-47)

On this server is a call recording application that uses /dev/cdrom2 to archive calls to.

At least once a week I get the following warning in my call recording application

"Unable to write to archive file 4768. Reason: non-zero exit status (19)"

What I end up doing is rebooting the server to recognize the USB DVD again. Is there a command I can use to get the application to recognize the DVD without rebooting. Has anyone heard of USB DVD drives having an issue on this version.

Apologies if I'm missing rudenmentary troubleshooting, I'm a telcom person learning as I go Linux platforms.

Many thanks!

One other thing to mention I am making sure witness nor root accounts are logged out when not needed.

Could you try periodically unmounting and mounting the filesystem? Perhaps that would have the effect of keeping it alive/known to the system.

I want to be good, is that not enough?

I have not tried that. Could you be so kind to show me the command to do that?

Thank you very much for responding.

Sorry, telcomwork, I have to dash, but if no-one else has contributed by tomorrow, I'll give you details. Personally, I'd use cron to issue an unmount <filesystem> and mount <filesystem> every so often. Regards and thanks for the (possibly premature) star!

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Thank you. You have given me some things to look up so the Star worth it in my opinion :)

You need to specify a filesystem type after the -t option. To mount a cdrom, use -t iso9660.

--== Anything can go wrong. It's just a matter of how far wrong it will go till people think its right. ==--

Thank you so my command would look like the following?

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom2

Do want to screw anything up so I'll wait for a response.

If I do a dmesg here's what I have:

What media are you using (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW) and what format (iso, udf) in on it. L-EC error usually means your media is screwed. Can you try another piece of media?

--== Anything can go wrong. It's just a matter of how far wrong it will go till people think its right. ==--

I'm using a DVD+/RW and not sure the format.

So it sounds like a bad external USB DVD burner?

I tried several DVDs but wondering if it's the burner itself?

Could try the DVD drive over on a Windows machine to see if things check out?
