I have bought a Ferrari 360 Modena wheel and I am suffering no end of trouble trying to install it.

I first tried to install it by way of USB - when I plug the wheel in my system recognises it then launches the 'add new hardware' wizard, and tries to look for software. It finds none and although I look on my system I cannot find any. I have to cancel this, but then the wheel is not found on my system in the 'gaming controls' field. I have tried ignoring the wizard but to no avail. The USB ports are all working. I have two USB ports, both UHCI host controlled.

I then tried to install it to the game port, and installed the driver software. The wheel is found and I install the appropriate 'thrustmaster ferrari' fom the listed devices. The fun then really starts.

I am suffering frame rate drops of over 50% on all racing games when the wheel is plugged in, together with corrupted 'bitty' sound, which is played through my Extigy system by way of another USB connection. I have tried unplugging the extigy but still terrible frame rate and sound.

The controller feels like treacle and is slow to respond. I ensure there are no background tasks running and have reinstalled my driving games in case it is a driver problem. TOCA2, GPL & GP3 are virtually unplayable.

I cannot seem to be able to find just the drivers on the CD which came with the wheel. I have used a custom install, just installing the USB and Gameport drivers, but where would they be installed to? It seems I have to point my Windows wizard to the right directory, but I just cannot seem to find them. I have tried the 'inf' and 'system' directories, as well as 'cabs', but there is no trace.

Please, anyone able to help? I am on the verge of taking the wheel back as it just gives me so many problems.

System Specification :

Processor : Duron 900mhz
Physical Memory : 384mb Free : 219mb
Motherboard : Legend QDI K7V8363
BIOS : date : apr 02,2001 Version : award 6.00PG
Video Card : PNY GeForce Ti 4200 Drivers : Detonator 30.82
Video BIOS : date : 05/07/02 Version : 4.25.00.29.00
Sound Card : VIA AC'97 Drivers : 11/30/2000 Microsoft
Operating System : Windows ME 4.90.3000
DirectX : 8.1
Thrustmapper : 2.33
Also attached via USB is a soundblaster Extigy card with creative speaker system.

My windows ME was installed on the machine by the manufacturer, and I only have a product recovery disc of some 335mb with the machine.

Update - the wheel is now recognised, but it is listed on 'other devices' with a question mark, where it tells me to install the driver. There is no usb driver for the device, thrustmaster tell me it is HID compliant and windows should already have a driver.

What next?!
