I am looking for two pieces of freeware:

The first to protect the data on my USB drive. I'd like it so that it runs right off the drive so I can use it no matter what computer I plug it in to.

The second is a password management software that would store all my passwords. I'd like it if this too ran off a usb drive.

Are we speaking of a USB external hard drive, or a "thumb" drive?
1. Win XP will recognize any USB thumb drive. Win 98 needs drivers installed.
2. There are two types of "thumb" drive: plain drive, and "key" drive with encryption built in.
3. Do a Google search for "free password" program.

To answer the questions above....

- it is a thumb drive
- there is no encryption built in

With no encryption, you can use PKZip to zip the files with encryption. Inconvenient, but works. The other way is to buy a new "KeyDrive" and use the thumbdrive for "everyday" use.
