I have a usb drive that does not show up unless I give it a drive letter, anyway to change this since different computers will have different drives. I want to set it up so that it pulls the next available letter automatically

Are you in a network setting?

The physical drive Mount Manager in XP is unaware of mapped network drives.

If the next device mount point is occupied by a mapped network share, the device will appear to have no drive letter assigned.

And, unlike hard disks and CD drives, removable storage devices are not granted a static drive letter asssignment under any NT version, including XP.

XP is in fact doing what you want: it is assigning the removable storage device the next drive letter after all CD Drives have been enumerated. The likely problem is that you have a network mapping on that drive letter, which is invisible to the Mount Manager.

This is a home pc on XP home. I have used network drives before however there is nothing connected at this time. My drive is not assigned anything. Only way that it apperas in explorer is if I go to manager and add a letter to it, then it shows up in explorer. But what I want is for it to just grab the next available letter.
