A friens of mine has an old IBM PC, Pentium 75, with Win 95. She got a Lexmark Printer (USB Connectors). So i openes the pc, put in a USB-Card and installed Win 98. In the Systemmanager you see the USB Root Hub and Via Controlleer working well, but i can't install the printer driver, the Pc can't assign the USB Port.
Has anybody an idea?
Sorry for my horrible English, i', German.

What error message do you get when you try to install the drivers?

It's a little tricky getting things lined up...
What you do is boot the machine and THEN (with the printer power ON) plug the printer into the USB port...and the system should IMMEDIATELY see the device connected to the port and give you an icon next to your time display in the system tray.
IF you're lucky, right clicking on the icon and choosing properties may say UNKNOWN device connected...which is your cue to again install the printer drivers.
Just on the off-chance you've installed multiple devices (I don't know HOW it happens, just that it DOES) I'd boot to safe mode and examine the ports and such to make sure there are no duplicates...removing all the references to USB add-on cards and let the machine discover them again on reboot.

On some Pentium 75 systems, I have seen USB cards work. On most Pentuim 75 systems, they don't work.

On some, the difference is a PCI specification (version number) difference between the motherboard and the USB card.

Try the suggestions that you get. If you just can't get the USB to work, perhaps you should try another brand USB card (it could be a broken card or it could be a card the doesn't like the Pentium 75 system). If that doesn't work, then....???

Good luck! Also--don't worry about your English. It is much better than my German! I just hope that MY English is OK! Mudskipper
