USB devices randomly "uninstalled" and then reinstalled

So I just got a new motherboard (EPoX 8K3AE) and now my USB devices get shut off from time to time and sometimes either don't come back on or it says "new USB device detected" as if they'd been uninstalled!

Could this be associated with an under-powered power supply? It's not a 300...

Thanks for any help :)

Simply put, "yeah". Of course, don't forget the possibility of a loose connection as well.... Mudskipper

Are you using a USB hub, or are the devices hooked directly to the computer? Mudskipper

Hrrmmm....strike two. What OS? What devices are doing this?

Let's see...
Assuming that one of the devices is the mouse or keyboard, do you have legacy USB support on? If so, then it should work in safe mode. Try it there--does it disconnect/reconnect still? If so, think hardware. If not, think software/drivers. I suppose that it could also be resources.

I'm obviously drawing a bit of a blank on this one. Any more detailed info might help here.

Anybody else out there have an idea? Mudskipper

Oh yeah-- does this tend to occure after a screensaver or power management kicks in? If you are not sure, try turning them off and see if the issue stops.... Mudskipper

legacy USB support?

It's only my USB devices. Haven't been watching my printer though :S

My guess is it's hardware because this didn't happen before I got the new mobo.

And it seems to happen whenever it wants. Not after screensaver or disc turn-offs. Just random it seems.

350 watt power supply (brand new)

Yeah, I'm only talking about your USB devices.... It could very easily be hardware, but I am not totally convinced of this (or course, I like to do things the hard way ;-))....

1) What are the USB devices that are doing this? Mouse, keyboard, camera....?

2) Incidentally, did you re-install windows after changing the motherboard, or are you trying to use an existing installation? Either way, it might pay to install your motherboard/chipset drivers.

3) As for the legacy support, in your CMOS Setup, go to Integrated Peripherals. Now look towards the bottom. You have two options - "USB keyboard support" and "USB mouse support". These, when enabled, will allow you to use USB keyboards or mice in safe mode, etc. You can refer to pages 4-12 and 4-16 in your motherboard manual on this. Mudskipper

Keyboard and mouse are doing it, as they're my only USB peripherals.

And no I didn't reinstall windows. It's my next step though :( Blarg, I do this like once every 2 weeks lately  3 times already in January I think...

Grumble grumble...

Ah well a wipe/re-install is best, but at the very least, get your new drivers in there!!!!!

Of course, you can always install a temporary copy of 2k on a temp hard drive (if you have one) just to see if the USB issue goes away.... Mudskipper

Ok I found the problem for my mouse:

Note the 8th post by Loie. His suggestion doesn't really fix the problem, but he's right about the cause. If I bend my mouse wire to and along the right side of mouse even about a half inch, it flickers off.

Now my keyboard going off may be attributed to the fact that my keyboard (the Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro) has been discontinued by Microsoft... So I'll do some research on the causes of it's discontinuation (that a word?).

Thanks for the help :) Appreciate it very much.

Ah! Just goes to show (again) that we (I) shouldn't overlook the easy stuff!! Glad it is going!! Mudskipper

May be unrelated, but my STORIX USB HD is really, really picky about the length of USB cable, and any cable over about a foot and half will cause all sorts of annoying problems with the drive and the computer itself.
