Hello all,

I am using a dsl usb bt broadband modem, howeve recently purchased a usb memory card reader, bluetooth msi usb dongle and am also using a sony ericsson usb data cable.

I have recently reformatted and installed the above devices only to find that whenever I have any device plugged in to ANY ports (i have 5 + a 4 port hub) my internet sufferes decreasing speeds and eventual drop outs.

I know its something to do witht he usb devices, as soon as i unplug them, the internet almost immediatly recovers! Its incredibly frustrating. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the devices, and swapping ports to no avail.

Please, does anyone know what the problem is? I've also just upgraded to Windows xp SP2 (something I never did before my reformat)

Any help would be great!

Cheers

It may be a power issue, is your hub internal or external? Is it externally powered? Have you tired plugging the modem into a USB port on the computer rather than the hub?

If you have an extrnal hub running from one USB port on your computer i would suggest plugging lower power devices into it and plugging the modem direct into your PC

Hope that helps,

sadly its not a power issue, I've known about the power issues with dsl usb modems, and so always have used an actual port on the pc for the modem.

any others with suggestions?

You need to directly plug your dsl modem into your computer, not into the hub.

Remember that the USB bandwidth is shared between all connected devices, so I would run it with as few connected as possible. Certainly as shatch and LloydSev say, connect the USB modem straight to a port on the motherboard rather than through a hub.
Consider having the external devices on a hub, so all you need to do is connect/disconnect the hub rather than lots of individual devices when not using the internet.

I had a friend with this problem before, the USB ports on the computer were not providing enough power. He purchased a PCI USB hub and things started working without any problems. I would suggest investing in one of these, they can be bought for under £10 and should do the trick, as it will act as a seperatly powered hub
