Hello,

I am having a problem with detecting USB devices on a new install of win XP pro.
Whenever I plug any USB device in the PC finds it as an "Unknown Device" and won't let me install any other drivers.
This is happening for the 3 USB devices I've tried, a digital camera, a usb data link cable and a printer.

Is it a problem with my XP install maybe or could it be a hardware problem. The fact that it finds the device but won't recognise it makes me think it's a software problem but basically I'm a bit stumped!!!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Are those devices USB 2.0 ones?
XP only supports USB 2.0 with SP1 installed.
And even then you may run into problems with them...

I just put a Belkin F5U220 USB 2.0 5-Port PCI card in a Celeron 1.2GB computer running WinXP [no SP], installed the software and everything works fine. Some USB 2.0 devices [hard drive, Lexar JumpDrive] worked fine [slower on the USB 1.1 ports] in spite of the warning about not being compatible.

Blujacket,
USB 2.0 works fine in any version of Windows (Win98 and later) as long as the software driver is provided by the manufacturer and properly installed. What temporello was referring to was built-in USB 2.0 compatibility, in which only XP SP1 provides without the need of a 3rd-party USB driver.

Hi,

I bought a dell dimension 2400 with XP HOme installed. It connected to the internet vis USB 2.0. Worked fine but I needed to get internet services etc so I upgraded to XP Pro. During the upgrade I got a message to the effect that the USB 2.0 driver wasn't passed by Microsoft and so I did not install it. How can I get a 'good' USB 2.0 driver for XP Pro?

Thanks,,

John
