USB Device not recognized

PC Specs:

1 GB RAM
200 GB HDD
Intel Pentium4 4CPU 3GHZ
6 USB PORTS

OS: MS Windows 7 Build 7600

Formatted PC 3 times. Neither it is a damaged Removable Device nor an outdated Driver.
Updated drivers, used Drivers from Motherboard too, but none of them actually helped.
Mobile Phone seems to be charging. Removable Devices sometimes (rarely) work but cease
to work within a minute or two after being recognized. Most of the time, the ports don't
work at all.

What device is it EXACTLY?? I"ve seen where windows 7 hasn't recognized some older USB solid state type hard drives (glorified memory sticks).

It is USB Keyboard and a Pendrive (NEW). They work well with other Laptops and another Desktop too. But, the USB Ports don't seem to be working in the PC. But, when I connect my Mobile Phone, it charges normally.

The fact that it charges the phone just means the ports deliver power, but they may have some other type of issue.

Usually the "Device Not Recognized" message is an indication that the proper connection between the ports and the device was not made.

Are the ports loose?

Are the ports built in to the motherboard?

Can you get an USB add-on card with more ports to test on the machine?

Do other Devices exhibit the same behavior or is it only these 2?

Are the USB ports 1.0 or 2.0? Are the devices 1.0 or 2.0?



Have you tried every port on the machine?

Agreed that charging a phone is not the same thing as proof of full usb port functionality.

If it's a "front of the case" usb port and if you built the PC yourself, are the connectors to the motherboard connected the right way. Sounds unlikely, but just checking.

I have a somewhat similar issue with a PC and webcams - the front ports will recognise USB sticks etc, but not webcams. The rear ports will. I can't see anything wrong with th econnections either. So I just live with it! I would guess a bad cable or something wrong with the mobo?

if it is the front, I will definitely have to say that it is the CABLE from the mainboard to the external USP port... lots of cheaper cases also use cheap cabling, these will deliver power but the Rx/Tx lines are just not up to the standard that they should be (e.g. no shielding)...

and I agree as well, that you should try all the ports (the ones in the back), also check the voltage on the ports (double click on the USB ROOT HUB, under one of the tabs it will tell you the mA that are being used), and if that does not work, then try a PCI(e) USB card...

I agree with the above, if it is front USB ports, they are notoriously flaky on cheaper cases.

But, none of them work. They do sometimes (if they do work it is almost 1 outof 89 or so). They cease to work within a minute or two if they however do get recognized.

It is so painful that I had to share the drive with other PC or upload-&-download to get the files transferred.

I have tried Driver-Updater Program/s but, the Ports don't seem to be working.

I came across a page where somebody had suggested the User to take off the Power Cable and keep it off for about 30 seconds or so.
I did the same for 30 seconds and didnot work. Then I disconnected the power for almost 2 hours and it got recognized but, ceased to work within a minute. I have reseated the Mobo too but, didnot work, changed the PSU and Battery which didnot help either.

The way I see it, you can use an add-in USB card OR replace the motherboard.

Just curious, have you tried in Safe Mode and under a different User account? If so or if the same results, see goomba's above.

Has the Chipset Driver for your particular motherboard been loaded? Your screenshot of the USB Root Hub and ports seems to be a very generic listing.
