HP Pavilion, O/S WMe, system halts right when POST starts, preventing it from getting to HD, HD led never turns on, it halts at the very first screen (HP loggo).

The problem would only go away when i remove my USB microsoft mouse,

I try the same USB mouse on my laptop (O/S WMe) the system detected the mouse installed drivers and worked fine.

I tried out an PS/2 mouse on my HP Pavilion system and it boots up fine,

can someone help me out solve my probelm!

Start your computer without the mouse connected. Use the Tab, Alt and Window keys to navigate to the control panel and remove you pointing device. Try restarting again without connecting the mouse and when you're in Windows, connect and reinstall your mouse.

If that fails, go to and get newer Intellipoint drivers for your mouse.

If that fails, and your HP computer allows it, get into your bios and make sure the USB Mouse option is set to OS and not BIOS.

Good luck!

double check all your IRQ settings at start up
