hi good folks! just posted this one on "cabling" but brike advises that i'd be better here..
i have just been given a nice little case with usb1 on the front panel. however, the m/board i have fitted has only usb2 including the additional m/board connector. any way i can use usb2 to connect the front panel usb1 ? i know nothing of the pin-outs and how they compare. silly? well, a resounding "no" will do fine. thanks

Pin-outs would be the same. However, the USB 2.0 is supposedly shielded better for the higher speed. You must be sure that the pin-outs are correct (wouldn't want to short the USB ports on the mother board). If you are using XP, you can hook them up to the motherboard and plug a USB 2.0 flash stick. If every thing is OK - no problem. If it says: "You would get better results with a 2.0 peripheral", it's only running at 1.1.

micker377...this sounds encouraging; i'll settle for 1.1. i appear to have less connectors than usb2 however. this is what the manual says for the board:
pin 1; vreg_fp_usbpwro front panel usb power
- 2; vreg_fp_usbpwro front panel usb power
- 3; usb_fp_po- usb port 0 negative signal
- 4; usb_fp_p1- usb port 1 negative signal
- 5; usb_fp_p0+ usb port 0 positive signal
- 6; usb_fp_p1+ usb port 1 positive signal
- 7; gnd gnd
- 8; gnd gnd
- 9; key no pin
- 10; usb_fp_0co overcurrent signal
-------

for the front panel connectors; (vcc, gnd, -d, +d) X2

can i assume that pin 10 is the odd one out? and go ahead?
if i lose the board option, so be it, but am i likely to blow the externals as well (sweat!)
by the by, the board is an ECS P4VMM2

You will probably have to pull the connectors in the front panel connector and rearrange them so they match the pins on the motherboard.

- 1; vreg_fp_usbpwro front panel usb power(+ 12 v.)USB0
- 2; vreg_fp_usbpwro front panel usb power(+ 12 v.)USB1
- 3; usb_fp_po- usb port 0 negative signal
- 4; usb_fp_p1- usb port 1 negative signal
- 5; usb_fp_p0+ usb port 0 positive signal
- 6; usb_fp_p1+ usb port 1 positive signal
- 7; gnd gnd
- 8; gnd gnd
- 9; key no pin
- 10; usb_fp_0co overcurrent signal

So far, I never blew a port - front ports just didn't work. Only worry is 12 v. and ground. Do you have individual wire plugs, 2 four or five connection plugs, or one 9 connection plug from "box"?

franklin97355...front panel connectors for usb/firewire/mic/phones are all in one totally sealed piece of sturdy plastic! inaccessible.

micker377...sorry, probably confused you with description. i have 8 single connectors for the board marked as above. there is no vcc0 or vcc1...is this critical?
by the way, thanks to both for your input.

update: firstly, the writing on the vcc conns. is so small that i failed to note that they read; 1 & 2, so that was sorted. hooked everything up and hey presto! i have two more usb2 front panel options. they don't care whether i use 1.1 flash drive or 2. tested a driver file transfer (30meg)with usb2 drive. no doubt by speed that its getting the full treatment. still slight worry about the pin 10 overvoltage protection though.
thanks again for explanations. i would never have risked it without the benefit of you guys' experience.
