Got USB2 ports on my laptop. It won't reconise antything plugged in (USB1.1 or 2) unless it's plugged in before the laptop is turned on. Example... USB key, doesn't need any drivers or anything, it works normally in any other machine. Stick it in my laptop nothing happens. Stick it in the laptop and restart the laptop, it finds it on restart. Tried updating the drivers in device manager, without success. Tried getting hold of ACI computers - they've gone into liquidation, probably over a USB issue! lol

Anyone out there got any ideas what to do to this lappy singing?

Issues like this may be caused by either the driver for the USB controller that is in your laptop, the chipset itself, and the OS in your machine.
Try go find what is the chipset in your laptop, and maybe the USB controller itself if it is not integrated to the chipset.
Then look for drivers. In many cases the drivers are just patches to get the USB controller to work as per the OS standards, because a USB controller has to obey some strict architecture.

Sorry it's XP Professional and i have got SP2, i've done allt the updates i can find too (

Some keys are more troublesome than others. My Sandisk USB key needed a driver to get properly handled by one of my Win98 systems, which uses a recent USB2 NEC chip. Another system has an integrated SIS USB 1.1 controller, and under Win98 I have never been able to get the Key to work, the system was even crashing. And another system with an SIS USB2.0 controller, under Win2K worked correctly.
Does any other USB device gets recognized automatically?
