USB Apps

I write after searching for 'Apps run on USB Drive'. I have not yet found a way to run apps of my own chosing on a windows formatted USB drive. Seeking to run microsoft XNA developer apps and some windows SDKs on a 16GB USB drive. Hoping for an informed reply.

These applications are generally known as Portable Apps...

some developers create such applications, and then there are also fan created versions of certain applications that are made portable...

I do not know if there is a portable version for those apps in question, that would be up to you to find out...

I do not understand the problem. In my experience, if the app lives on the USB drive, it runs without any modifications on that drive. If an app needs to access data on a USB drive, it only needs the drive letter.

Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 (2011) has specific modules to enable entire operating systems with limited and specialized functions to run from USB sticks and even SD cards. Evaluation development kits are available to download free from Microsoft, as well as training demonstrations and courses and training resources.

Creating entire thin clients and kiosk-type OS applications with enhanced write filter capability to enable robust operation from portable solid state media can be developed, built and installed in a similar time to that required to install a full Windows 7 retail OS, but with a much smaller footprint.

Using the Image Based Wizard templates and the Image Configuration Editor distribution sources, a rapid prototyping and customization environment allows the modules to satisfy and validate all dependencies, resulting in an answer file that takes just minutes to compile from the sources into a fully working operating system, customized for the hardware it loads onto.

In the full working version licence validation and activation takes place immediately on initial run, and lasts for the lifetime of the appliance. In the evaluation version a standard 30-day period is available, and developer evaluation licences for 180 days and education 365 day licences are available through the channels.
