USB Application communications problem

I have written an application which communicates with an embedded device via FTDI USB system drivers.
All is fine when running the application on the Desktop machine I used for development (running 32 bit Vista)
However when running on Laptops (XP 32bit and W7 63bit tried) the comms quality is so poor as to be useless.
Anyone know why this might be?
