USB and PS2 Mouse both go dead at different times

I have a Windows XP: Professional-based PC and two optical mice, one uses as USB port, the other the old PS2 serial port.

When playing games, or just using the computer (any old time), the optical mouse will go dead, the light will turn off, and I will have to wait for 10 to 30 seconds for the PC to recognize that the "USB Device has been disconnected" or otherwise isn't working and unplug and replug in the USB Mouse.

The PS2 Serial port mouse does the same darn thing, only I don't have to unplug or replug it in. Having one mouse at a time makes no difference, I tried two just to see if the other would work, then swapped.

My wild guess is that this is due to an IRQ conflict, but none show in the Hardware Device Manager. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my USB mouse as well as my USB hub on my motherboard to no avail. I have installed specific drivers for my USB mouse to no avail.

What might I try or what further information would be helpful?

My thanks in advance, guys.

I used to use a ps2 (cordless) mouse and a USB trackball at the same time. After the last MicroShaft updates, I can no longer do this - the USB locks up. In fact, the computer won't boot with the USB trackball plugged in!
