USB & PS2 Mouse Not Working

This is a really strange one. I've got a customers Windows XP Pro machine which had a corrupt registry, which has recovered and now boots fine.

However the original mouse which is PS2 no longer works. I've plugged in a USB mouse and this doesn't work either.

I know this isn't a hardware issue because using a Linux Boot CD, the mouse works fine.

I'm sure this a problem in the registry or with drivers.....

Can anyone help?

Is the USB options enabled in the Bios?

Have you tried removing the Mouse from Device Manager by uninstalling it, rebooting, and let Windows rediscover it?

Do both mice work in Linux?

The only other thing I've seen stop a mouse altogether is a security program. If it runs fine in Windows w/Safe Mode, make sure you don't have a security program blocking the mouse driver in normal mode.

I just saw this the other day connecting a new USB mouse to an XPS desktop running Windows 7 and a Core i7 CPU. At startup, when the mouse driver was trying to install, Comodo Security asked if I wanted to allow it. Well, I couldn't find the right keyboard combination to get the focus to that messagebox in order to say "yes", so I had to start in safe mode, let the mouse install, and reboot into normal mode. Not a big deal, but annoying nonetheless.

Hi all,

Still no joy.

It doesn't work in Safe mode and it isn't a security issue.

I've also tried the trick of booting with just the mouse connected, but still no joy.

What I have noticed is that when I have the PS2 mouse connected it tries to install it a Microsoft PS2 mouse but gets the yellow mark next to it and has error 10, the device cannot be started.

If I have the USB mouse connected, this installs ok as a HID Compliant Mouse but doesn't actually work.

I thought it would simply be a case on downloading some standard ps2 mouse drivers, but you can't get these anywhere.

Any other ideas?

run sfc /scannow and see if that helps

Not sure if it's applicable in your case, but in the good ol' days before PS/2 ports were dreamed of, we had things called serial mice! Wonder if it's worth trying one of those if the machine has a serial port...

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

you could try to reinstall the USB drivers...

Code: 
copy c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys   c:\windows\temp\usbport.sys

delete c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys

copy c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\usbport.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys
and replace the following as well...

c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbohci.sys with c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall\usbohci.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbuhci.sys with c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall\usbuhci.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\mouclass.sys with c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall\mouclass.sys

or extract them from a SP2 XP install CD...

For the Prod Key, there are at least a few programs, free, which will tell you what it is. So you can cover that part. For the Windows CD, you just need to see what version they have (Home/Pro, OEM/Retail), and use the same such disk to reinstall/repair install.

Also, there's a way to save the activation files if it requires it. I know one member here told how to do that, 2 files, but I can't remember what they were at the moment. I can find it and post a link to the thread if you prefer.

Hi,

I have the product key using a reader, but I only have an OEM CD. I repaired the install with this CD, but it wouldn't except the product key, so I'm guessing it must be a retail version.

Is there anything I can do to overcome this with the existing software I have?

I am pretty sure you'll need a retail disk. You can try the winver command at the command prompt to make sure as to what version of Windows it is as well.. Though I think the other program should tell you the same info.

And there's the Belarc Advisor program. It'll tell you plenty about the machine, including info on Windows and Office. Not sure if it'll help by this point, but can't hurt to verify with another source.

Here's something that looks right up your alley. See if you can use the following instructions to get a retail install CD out of your OEM CD:

Starting to wish I had a serial mouse to hand......

Any other offerings?

I've already advised the customer that purchasing XP again is the only real option here, unless I can get this bizarre mouse problem resolved!
