Hi

We have a laptop that the USB port is broken on, so we installed a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card and attached the ADSL Speedtouch 330 Modem to it. But the speedtouch will not work through the PCMCIA, does anyone have any ideas how to get them to work.

OS = Win XP Pro, SP1

We know the connection is OK because we tested it on another laptop and it worked fine. However when we tested the connection through the PCMCIA card it did not work on that machine either.

The problem is that the Laptop only hase one USB port and the customer is paying monthly subscription for no use at the moment.

Many thanks

USB ports allow maximum of 500ma. Some of these USB modems actually draw slightly more than 500ma which usually stops the USB service to prevent damage.

I'd try and borrow a powered USB hub and see if that helps

Hi

Can a powered USB hub be attached to teh PCMCIA card to work or is it the PCMCIA card that is the problem.

Its hard to say if the card is the problem.

The powered hub will act as a buffer between your device and the card. Being powered it can cope with devices that draw a bit too much power.

If you go to device manager you should be able to look at the root hub(s) and if you look at the properties for these you can see what power is being drawn.
