My friends Sony Viao desktop was subjected to a couple power hits and inspite of a good ups system the usb2.0 ports have all gone to usb1 mode.
Any ideas how to get back to 2.0 ?
If you don't see the word "enhanced", then Windows isn't properly recognizing the USB controller on the southbridge chipset. If that's the case, you will need to go out to Sony's site and download the chipset drivers for that model laptop.

So do you or do you not see the word "enhanced" per the instructions at that link?
Also, what is the Sony Vaio's model number?

Make sure you have the latest service pack 2, make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date. Delete all USB, the bottommost section in the HardWare device list. Do this in safemode if it doesn't work in normal, restart. If it was a power issue it could have blown an IC. Check your BIOS settings, maybe pop the battery out for a bit and put it back in to reset it.
