Is there any way I can have veritas backup a file to a different location and have the backup file the exact same file that was backed up? I want to move my SQL database from one drive to another and since it is 115 gig, NT Copy cannot move it. I want detach the database, copy the file through Vertias somehow, and reattach once the file has moved. I do not have enough space to do a backup and restore of the data file. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks,

Dan

Sure you can.

Detach the SQL database.
Click on BACKUP in Veritas Backup Exec.
You will see a 'tree' of servers, etc. that you can backup.
Find the SQL Server one.
Expand that and you will see the drives that you can backup.
Find the one that has your SQL Server files.
Expand that. Keep expanding until you see the folder that has the .mdf and .ldf files.
Click on that and in the right pane you will see a list of the files in that folder.
Check the ones you want to copy.
Complete the rest of the Backup information and run the backup.

Then select RESTORE and find the files you just backed up and restore them (there's an option for retoring them to a new location).

The problem is that we do not have enough space on the new location to hold the backup and a full copy of the mdf file. So our database file is 115 gigs, we backup to the new location we use 115 gig, then we do a restore and that would take an additional 115 (230 total) to hold both the backup and restore of the file. Any way to do it once?

Are you using Veritas to backup to tape or disk?

I 'assumed' you were backing up to tape.

Veritas is a BACKUP program, so I don't believe it lets you MOVE files. You have to back them up to some thing and then you can restore them. However, if you are using BE9.0 you can backup to disk, so you should be able to direct the backup to the new location.

Either way, once you have the file in the new location, just attach it.

re the space issue, you could try (if you haven't already) compressing the directory that you are using then uncompress it once the file has been restored and the backup deleted.
