US Robotics modem issue......

I have a two part question. I am trying to install a new 56k USR modem in a XRAM computer. When I install the modem, the computer will not shutdown. It goes through the motions, the screen goes blank and then it boots back up. Does anyone have any ideas? Secondly...the reason im installing the new modem is because the the old modem(3com) would not release the phone line after the connection was terminated. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix either or both of these issues? I thank you in advance.

Need more details - like whats your computer - hardware/operating system etc! CPU - mobo etc etc

sorry bout that...It's an XRAM Desktop 2.8hz with 512 mem running XP pro. The modem is a US robotics 56k PCI V.92
