I need to tar the Oracle Application Platinum42 CDs to tape and send it to our client today. The CDs have been staged to /plat42. The command 'tar -cf /dev/rmt/0c /plat42' returned errors to me. The error messages are 'Directory nesting too deep'. Could anybody help me with this? This is urgent because the client need it tomorrow.

Thank you very much.

Are you using sun's tar or gnu tar? There are known issues with sun's tar program. I am not sure if the problem you are having is one of them, but if it is you might want to try installing gnu tar. You can get both the package or souce from . Hope this helps. If it does please post back so that other that have similar issues might also find the solution.

I know there are issues with longer filenames, but that probably isn't the problem here. You could try using the E function modifier, which allows for longer filenames. If this doesn't work, I'd go with paladin's suggestion and get yourself gnu tar. Good luck.

I am not very familiar with Solaris. Could you give me an example of the 'E function modifier' you mentioned? Thank you so much.

Sorry - I think all you need to do is put it in your command, ie tar -cfE

As I say, I'm doubtful whether this is the problem, and your best bet might be to obtain gnu tar. All the best.

Thank you all so much. I will also try 'ufsdump' and 'cpio'.
