Hi all Gentran NT gurus out there,

I am relatively new to Gentran Server NT. The terminology seems to be slightly different from the mainstream EDI.
If someone could shed some light by giving me a close translation for the following terms / phrases, it would
be really great

1. Translation object (Map??)
2. System Transalation object
3. Application Data
4. EDI / Standards data

5. The usage of import / export /print etc related to inbound / outbound EDI/ Application format data

These are for starters. Once I get an initial handle on the
product, I will be definitely begging for more help

Thanks a lot for all wonderful folks out there

1. A translation object is a compiled map. It is used by the translator to do the mapping

2. A system translation object is one provided by Sterling typically to to the envelope and acknowledgment mapping automatically for you

3. Application data is your own system side data (ie. non-EDI data)

4. EDI / Standards data is data that is in one of the supported standards. EDI being the main one

5. Import refers to the action or process of translating data from your systems (application format data) into Gentran to become outbound (EDI) data to your trading partners.

Export refers to the action or process of translating inbound (EDI) data from your partners out of Gentran to your system application format data.

Import and Export have always been confusing in the Gentran context. It basically refers to the direction of non-EDI data. Import into Gentran non-EDI data or Export out of Gentran non-EDI data.

I hope this helps!

Thank you Voyager. It did help, but I have more specific questions now.

Whats the Gentran:Server/NT terminology for the following

- EDI data
- Application format data
- Mapping
- Map

Also could you please give me a very brief overview of

- Application Integration
- Forms Integration

And, where do you define the mapping

- from EDI data to Application format data?
- Application format data to EDI data?

How do you compile a map into translation object?

How do you connect TPs to a maps/translation objects?

I understand I am asking a lot of questions...Please answer
as your time permits...Thanks much!

I'm not sure how to answer your first set of questions. I think those are the Gentran terminologies.

Application Integration is the process of building the maps and then compiling them into translation objects.

Forms integration is the process of building maps to create reports to print EDI data or to create screens to enter EDI data. I don't find the Forms Integrator useful. I think it was designed for those who did not have interfaces in and out of their legacy system. With this product they could print off inbound EDI and key in outbound EDI.

All mapping is done in the Application Integrator.

So here's a question for you. Are you using this product and do you have the manuals? I would highly recommend taking the administration, operation and mapping courses offered by Sterling. It will save you a lot of grief
