I have just started a new position and have inherited a 2 linux servers.
I have however never worked with Linux before.
We have just be informed that our floor of the building is to have a power outage for 2 hours tonight.

What is the procedure, and commands if applicable, for downing and restarting linux servers?

Many thanks

Ben

Well, I hope this gets to you in time.
from the console, you can type shutdown - h now
or from the gui, there should be a shutdown dialog also.
good luck!
Keith

Thanks keith,

I've got a few hours to go thank goodness!

What about startup, should it all be taken care of by the equivalents of Autoexec files etc??

What does the -h do?

Many thanks for your help

Ben

The computers should be setup to start everything at boot.

The [tt]-h[/tt] option to [tt]shutdown[/tt] means to halt the machine. See the man page for more information ([tt]man 1 shutdown[/tt]). //Daniel
