Hi
i have a customer who has broadband internet using a netopia modem in bridge mode connected to a sonicwall. last thursday it went down so i went on site. i tried 3 different netopia modems. i took the sonicwall out of the equation and just tried to get the connection via the modem. the connection comes up fine when connected straight to a pc, but when i connect the modem (any of them) to the switch, i can ping the modem and open a web page to it (stats say dsl up) but i cant access the web. i have used dhcp and static. im an IT engineer and have done this loads of times.i rang the ISP and they were saying first they say faults on the line , then they didnt (you know the way ISPs are). the dsl line is not connected to a box on the wall, it is paired straight into the c hrome box. when i move it to d switch the status says up mose of the time but sometimes it says not connected) the isp said there is a lot of noise on the line and attentuation is 55. what dosent make sense is why does it work when a cable goes from the modem straight to a pc. but goes down the second its plugged into any switch port. i have logged a line fault with the ISP and they are looking at it. i just hope im not after missing somethign trivial and simple as i will b in big trouble if i have. any ideas ????

Try using a crossover cable between the modem and the switch.

that wont work. the switch is just a dumb switch. and i can ping and http to it when connected to switch

What exactly do you mean by "i cant access the web."? Have you tried pinging yahoo.com by name? by IP address? Are the DNS servers resolving names properly?

Without knowing more info, my guess is that DHCP server function of the sonicwall is properly providing DNS resolution.

And by the way, every problem is urgent, there's no need to put it in the title. And when you copy & paste from another forum, only copy the text of the problem, not the forum functions.

not every problem is urgent. anyway the sonciwall was taken out of the scene so it has nothing to do with this. as i said i connect the modem to the switch , i give any pc a static address with all the correct dns etc and it wont open any page. when i do diags from the modem, it just says destination host unreachable either by name or ip address

Right, only HIS problems are urgent, everyone else's are unimportant. We thought you knew that.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

for gods sake. i was only sayinig not all problems are as urgent as each other. thats common sense.

Have you tried any protocols other than http (anything besides a web browser)? Have you tried pinging any web servers by name or by IP address? If you've correctly set up using 3 different routers & no sonicwall, what does that leave for possibilities?

i have tried pinging web servers. when the modem is connected to the switch , it says destination unreachable. i think it has to be a line issue. could this be the case?? the attentuation is 55

This fact seems to indicate that it's unlikely to be the line.

Also, I have to ask: You did check/swap/replace the related cabling to make sure that's not the problem, didn't you?

yeah, i used different cat 5 cable. different port on the switch. didnt change the dsl cable as it is punched on to the chrome box
