Hello:
My knowledge of Oracle is not very deep but I think that there is a working mode that is safer but slower (Archive mode). Another interesting thing coul be check the patch level of your system, a colleague of mine had problems with Informix performance and he solved it installing some patches recommended by HP support to 10.20:
PHKL_18483
PHKL_17013
PHKL_17254
PHKL_20611
PHKL_17028
PHCO_17389
PHCO_23437
PHKL_17717
PHKL_21595
PHNE_17730
PHNE_19936

PHKL_13260
PHKL_16750
PHKL_13261

Have you seen if your system has enough resources to manage Oracle, perhaps sar -u and swapinfo can help you to see the resources of your system. Another tool interesting could be Glance.

Have you had a look at the Oracle forums here on Tek-Tips? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.
