The .dbf files containing all our data has been deleted and permantly lost.

Is it possible to restore a database straight from an EXPORT file or do I have to create all the tables spaces, tables, users etc etc. up from scratch?

What should I do???

Any advice would REALLY be apprecited on this one!

You will need to create a basic database (system tablespace, non-system rollback segments, temporary segment tablespace). If it is a full database export, the export will contain definitions of the other tablespaces and will create them for you.

I'd recommend "ignore=y" on the import in case you've already created something that the export then also tries to create (e.g. rollback segment tablespace).

Our database already has some tablespaces. It was just the .dbf files for one tablespace that got deleted.

Does this mean a full export will create everything I need without worrying about the system tablespace, non-system rollback segments, temporary segment tablespace etc?

If this is the case I'll be brething a lot easier.

Thanks

A full database export will contain all user objects, including a lot of system's that build with the utl*.sql scripts.
After creating an "empty" database with the same, or similar settings to your old one, simply import the full export, and you should be back to where you started.
If your export is not a full one, then you should export the other tablespaces before re-creating the database, then import them as well.
I fully agree on the "ignore=y" option.
Hope this helps,
