Uptime shows Load High

Hi guys,

I am having issues with uptime showing Load High as below :

uptime
09:56AM up 44 days, 10:26, 167 users, load average: 12.30, 11.62, 11.60

the box is a :
modelname IBM,7017-S85

processors :
Model Implementation: Multiple Processor, PCI bus

how can I find out what is causing the Load High, I have read a few website but its not clear on whats causing this problem...can anyone help?

Sorry, I am not familiar with IBM systems. But from the information you have given, it looks like 12 of the 18 processors are busy (the other 6 look idle), so I wouldn't worry. Try:
vmstat 1 6 # check out the man page for full details

The first column ('r') is the run queue (ie the number of processes waiting for a CPU), so it is usually 0 on light to medium loaded systems. When this number rises to about half the number of CPUs, then start to worry. When this number is more than the number of CPUs, then you might have problems. The last column ('id') is the percentage 'idle time' over all CPUs. Only if this is 0 (0% idle = 100% busy) for prolonged periods of time would it be time to start worrying.

Is anyone complaining about the performance?

Take a look at topas or nmon, to diag the problem, It could also be useful for you to get an evaluation of sarcheck this should tell you where your bottlenecks are.
