I have a Proliant ML370 Server with Compaq UPS running NT4 Server + SP6a, Several times in the last few weeks it has gone to a power down mode where it hangs waiting for user input, you know the one where NT4 invites you to click on the button to restart, users cannot access the server until it has been rebooted, the Event Viewer says "the UPS service has performed a shutdown of NT4 Server"
What is happening here? does the UPS think a power failure has happened? all other servers are running normally, this one ran smoothly until recently, no changes have been made apart from adding a new 38GB hot swap drive
I would be grateful for any suggestions

If the UPS is connected only to this server (and not the others) the problem could be the UPS itself or in the communications cable. You should check the cable first, and make sure is properly connected. Maybe the UPS is not working properly; or maybe you are really having power problems (if other UPSs do not detect power problems they could be connected to a different power phase).
Your UPS monitoring software should have an events log, look inside for the explanation of the problem. If your operating parameters are set in the software you should check not to be using a very narrow window for input voltage.
If the problem starts when the new hard drive was added, maybe the UPS maximum power is being exceeded. Again, the events log should give you an idea.

Regards,

Thanks for your reply Jose,
Part of the problem is that UPS'es usually get shoved under the server bench because of their weight, this makes it difficult to see whats happening to the LEDs on the front. in this case the battery was reading only 25% charge,
Compaq replaced the whole UPS under warranty, and everything is now running smoothly again, I have also installed the LanSafe III Software that came with the unit, hopefully this will help monitor all the UPS'es and help avoid this problem in the future
Many thanks for your help
