Hi
Is there any such device that will tell you if a ups battery is any good ... ie. able to keep a charge?

Thanks
Pat

A UPS battery is similar to other batteries out there on the market. You can use any normal battery tester to find out if the battery actually has power in it or not. Other than that your actual UPS would be your best inidicator as to the ability of your battery to charge. Make sure your UPS is properly sized for the load you are going to put on it .. Install your communication software and check your readings.

Thanks...where can I get a battery tester?

Pat

You can get one of those at your local Shack (Radio Shack)

You could buy a digital multitester (you can find them in many stores, even Sears for less han $ 30). Whit this tool you will be able to check not only the bateries but also many parameters (line to neutral voltage, neutral to ground voltage, etc.).
If you want to check the bateries you need to put the multimeter in DC Volts and expect to read between 10.5 and 14.8 volts per battery (for 12 Volts batteries). Even you could keep the multitester connected and make a dynamic test to the battery bank (for charge and/or discharge cycles).
